Norwood primary celebrate literacy month

NORWOOD – The day aimed to raise awareness about the importance of literacy.

In line with the universal literacy campaign, Norwood Primary School children joined the rest of the globe on 8 September to commemorated International Literacy Day.

International Literacy Day is held annually around the world to raise awareness about issues surrounding adult and child literacy as part of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (Unesco).

According to the organisation’s website, the day is earmarked to highlight the changes and improvements being made worldwide in literacy development.

Head of the department in the foundation phase Salosh Frank explained that this year’s theme was ‘Read, Write, Think’ at the Norwood school. “This day is celebrated to spread awareness about the importance of the literacy to our children as well as to our educators and parents,” said Frank.

“We invited parents to be part of our celebrations. In Grade R we had Nursery Rhyme Day, in Grade 2 we had a Poetry Recital Day and in Grade 3 we had a Debate Day.”

Frank added that they also had a reading competition in Grades 1, 2 and 3 which was very exciting.

According to the teacher, literacy provides children and everyone else, including teachers, with opportunities to become everything they wish to be. “Literacy is a foundation to build a more sustainable future.”

Frank emphasised that, although they celebrate literacy this term, the Read, Write, Think initiative is encouraged throughout the year. “Teaching our children to read and write not only helps them to grow but also contributes to the overall growth and upliftment of our nation,” concluded Frank.
