Hundreds of Joburg firefighters suspended

JOBURG – The City of Johannesburg EMS handed the suspension letters to numerous firefighters across the city.

According to media reports by EWN and our sister publication The Citizen, the City of Johannesburg has suspended about 230 firefighters on 20 September.

It was reported by EWN that the suspension was due to an illegal strike with some firefighters refusing to attend call-outs, handing their petition of grievances to the City.

The report further stated that the media had seen suspension letters issued to the firefighters. Firefighters are accusing the City’s Emergency Services Management (EMS) of not complying with the National Health Act.

EMS spokesperson Robert Mulaudzi confirmed the suspensions and added that there was no need to panic and that the matter was being dealt with internally.

Mayor Herman Mashaba confirmed in July that the City had a shortage of fire engines with 12 operating and five in for service and repairs. The City did open a tender process to find new service providers to build more fire engines.
