The 4th annual Maimane Alfred Phiri (Map) Games at Nokuthula LSEN School in Lyndhurst was a success on 30 August.
The Map Games are organised by Phiri, a former Bafana Bafana skipper and Mamelodi Sundowns player, to support children with special needs.
Phiri said it was always exciting to be part of this initiative which was growing at a fast rate with more sponsors wanting to come on board.
“As you can see, it is still the same activities we normally do which include netball, soccer, and other indigenous games, and children are enjoying themselves and that is important to me,” added Phiri.
“We are looking at growing them even better and get more sponsors to ensure that this initiative is a success and is sustainable. We are looking at organising wheelchairs for the children next year to enable those who might not have them to also be mobile.”
Brian Sibeko, Domino’s Pizza manager in Rivonia, said they were excited to be part of this year’s Map Games and hope to continue in the future.
Sibeko added that this was not the first time they were supporting Phiri in his ventures.
“As for this particular one here at Nokuthula LSEN School, it is the first time but we are excited because it is a good initiative and it forms part of our social corporate investment to the community.
“It is also important to us because we are sponsoring children with pizza which could be a luxury for some of them and today we hope they will enjoy it.”
Trevor Mkhonta, deputy principal at the school, said their relationship with the Map Games was fantastic.
“We’re grateful to Maimane Phiri and his people for continuing to show support to our children and the school,” said Mkhonta.
