Holy Family College celebrates 114 years with colour festival

PARKTOWN – Young and old enjoyed a day of fun at Holy Family College's 114th birthday.

Holy Family College celebrated its 114th birthday in style on 14 September by hosting a colour festival and market at their school grounds in Parktown.

The principal of the primary school Ottoline Robertson said the school began in 1905 by the Holy Family Sister as a girls-only convent. The school has since transformed into a co-ed, diverse school with learners mostly coming in from Soweto and surrounding areas.

“Children start here from age one, through our ECD [early childhood development] programme, and stay until matric. We currently have about 510 learners at the school,” said Robertson.

She said that the birthday celebration was an opportunity for children to come to school for fun and spend time with their friends and family in a social environment.

College principal Franc Sobreira explained that the birthday celebrations also served as a fundraiser. “Children set up stalls and community members helped raise money for the school to improve resources,” said Sobreira.
