New student accommodation project to yield jobs for Yeoville residents

YEOVILLE – More than R86 million has been allocated for the project in Yeoville.

Ward 64 proportional representative councillor Joshua Apfel has welcomed the recently unveiled housing project in Yeoville.

The launch of the R86-million project, which is expected to include a student accommodation as well as low-cost houses for residents, was led by City of Joburg Mayor Herman Mashaba.

Apfel explained that the vacant empty piece of land situated on the corner of Joe Slovo Road and Hendon Street will soon be turned into a construction site.

He said the project will benefit the residents of Yeoville and surrounding areas, “This is a public-private partnership and it is expected to yield construction jobs for residents in Ward 64 and surrounding areas.

“We see this as a good project for the area considering that we also have a university in the proximity and students will now have accommodation close to their institution. Most of all this will help create much-needed jobs for the locals.”

Media specialist from the Office of the Executive Mayor, Andile Ndlovu, agreed that this project will bring both jobs and quality affordable housing to the residents and students. “These properties represent part of an R22-billion investment in the inner city which is expected to generate 11 000 direct construction sector jobs.

“The inner-city revitalisation project is expected to yield approximately 6 500 units of affordable quality housing with rentals beginning from R900 per month.”
