The Bramley police management has recently learnt of a scam in which victims are being conned out of their money by perpetrators pretending to be police officials.
According to Bramley Police Station spokesperson Captain Molefe Mogodi, a recent victim was allegedly called by someone pretending to be a police officer. During the conversation, he allegedly informed the victim that their vehicle had been recovered.
The suspect then allegedly claimed that they need money to tow the vehicle to the station near the victim. “It only emerged later that the caller was actually an impostor who was after the money of the victim. By the time the victim realised he was scammed, the money was already deposited,” Mogodisaid.
Bramley Police Station has provided the following advice for the community:
- When you report your stolen vehicle to the police, there will normally be two messages sent to your phone. The messages will notify you of the case number and the names of the investigation officer. He or she will be the only person dealing with you on the matter throughout.
- The investigation officer will confirm that he or she is the one handling your case by calling you. You will be updated on the status of your case.
- There is no money involved when your vehicle is recovered, be it for towing or any other reason.
- The police will never request or demand money from you.
- Notify the police handling your matter immediately should you receive such strange calls.
