Metro police raid confiscates R10 million worth of counterfeit goods in Dragon City

FORDSBURG – Provincial spokesperson Mavela Masondo said during the raid some shops owners closed and locked their doors, he said the police broke the doors to seize the goods.


There was a major blow for counterfeit goods traders in Dragon City, Fordsburg, as police, Metro police and brand owners embarked on a joint operation on 11 September.

This follows crime intelligence information that several stores were engaged in selling counterfeit goods in the area. 

Captain Mavela Masondo, Gauteng police spokesperson said authorities confiscated millions of rands worth of counterfeit goods. “Several brands including clothing, shoes, bags, jewellery and cosmetics were removed as these operations are continuing,” he said.

More than 15 people were arrested during the raids for offences ranging from possession of counterfeit goods or being an illegal immigrant.

According to the City’s Group Forensic and Investigation Service, the estimated value of the seized goods is more than

R10 million including 15 counterfeit Rolex watches with a street value R1 500. “The genuine items are valued at over

R100 000 each. Various other high-value brands such as Rado, Casio, Apple and Micheal kors were also found and confiscated in Dragon City.”

Masondo said during the raid some shop owners closed and locked their doors. “Police had to break them open to seize the goods. Confiscated goods were removed and taken as exhibits. More information is being followed to deal with the influx of counterfeit goods from abroad and locally manufactured goods.”

Police said these type of operations would continue.
