Parkview residents attend their annual meeting

PARKVIEW – Residents had to say goodbye to some long-standing association members while they also welcomed a new executive committee.

Parkview residents gathered at the Parkview Golf Club for their annual general meeting (AGM) to address issues affecting them.

The Parkview Residents’ Association (PRA) chairman Marian Hester said the association would soon be looking at programmes to deal with displaced people. “We are told that the issue of displaced people is getting worse.

” I have spoken to the Rosebank Homeless Association to learn about the programmes they have and we are asking you (residents) to give us permission to do something similar through a vote.”

She added that they would involve the churches as well as SafeParkview and the attendees of the meeting voted in favour of the motion.

When residents inquired about what to do during instances of clashes with some members of the police, Dave Drinkwater from the Finance and ad hoc projects advised residents what to. “If you have issues with the police please let the Community Policing Forum (CPF) know because we take such issues very seriously. Parkview Police Station is a high-profile station, therefore, it is imperative that exemplary behaviour is adhered to at all time.”

Hester said the association had commented on the Johannesburg Roads Agency’s (JRA) list of roads due for repair but they were still waiting for a response from JRA.

Marketing and communications manager for PRA, Theresa Gibbon said a number of streetlights had been fixed in the suburb but it was a big, time-consuming task and they needed volunteers to assist. Volunteers were also requested to assist with planting and maintaining of vegetable beds at George Hay Park.

Chair of the PRA Street Trees Subcommittee, Isabel Thompson said there is no cure for the shot-hole-borer beetle. “We have marked infected trees and white crosses don’t mean the trees are doomed, it’s a question of data gathering and monitoring. We advise residents to replant trees which are less likely to be susceptible and also participate in your tree-walks.”

Other issues discussed at the meeting were:

  • Fire prevention project – The PRA has been trying to get hold of the City’s maps showing the positions of all the hydrants in the area so as to assist residents/fire engines to act more swiftly in future, but this has proved difficult.
  • Maintenance projects – there is a weekly street-cleaning team which does regular clean-ups of storm water drains, pavements and gutters.
  • Vumacam public surveillance project – At the SafeParkview AGM on 4 June, members voted overwhelmingly that the Vumacam initiative was worth pursuing and SafeParkview is effectively proposing to absorb the cost of the initiative.

As the meeting concluded, Hester read out nominated names for the new executive committee and they were all approved through a vote. The chairman gave a word of thanks to everyone involved in running things and congratulated the new executive committee before rendering her own farewell of the committee due to health reasons.
