City says it needs intelligence-led policing to fight inner-city violence

JOBURG – MMC for Public Safety Michael Sun says the City needs the intelligence to prevent attacks seen recently.

The City of Joburg MMC for Public Safety Michael Sun said it was unacceptable that incidents of looting and violence in the inner-city continued despite recent calls from leaders for people to end the unrest.

Sun added that 17 suspects have been arrested for public violence and the JMPD and the Emergency Mangement Services (EMS) have been deployed to support the local police.

“In the past days, JMPD has on average over 900 members and 220 patrol cars on the ground, EMS has fire engines on standby and ambulances on standby to respond to any emergencies.”

Sun said even though the Metro police were in constant communication with the police, it was not enough. He said the City was in desperate need of intelligence-led policing. “Without proper intelligence being utilised to prevent the further outbreak of violence, we are being left on the back foot having to respond to any outbreaks.

“I will be communicating with the Gauteng Provincial MEC for Community Safety [Faith Mazibuko] to request details of the provincial and national government’s plans to assist the City.”
