Man shot dead after pointing a gun at police officers in Hillbrow

HILLBROW –Tembe said that while the suspect was being chased, he turned around and ran back towards the officers and pointed a firearm at them.

According to a statement released on Facebook by the Chief of the Metro police, David Tembe, on 9 September a specialised unit was patrolling near the intersection of Wolmarans and Nugget streets attending to complaints of smash-and-grabs at gunpoint in Hillbrow.

“Officers spotted three suspicious males standing at the corner and they stopped to observe. The suspects fled the scene and officers gave chase after two suspects who had run towards Pietersen Street. The suspects then shot at the officers and the officers also returned fire. The suspects split up and one suspect continued running along Pietersen Street and the other one ran back towards Saratoga Avenue,” said Tembe in the statement.

Tembe added that while the suspect was being chased, he turned around and ran back towards the officers and pointed a firearm at them. The officers opened fire, fatally wounding the suspect. He died at the scene.

Metro police spokesperson, Wayne Minnaar confirmed that the suspect was killed during the shootout with the police.
