Suspect arrested by Johannesburg police for dangerous weapon

JOHANNESBURG – The suspect claim he bought the gun for his son.

A man who allegedly bought a toy gun for his child was arrested by the Johannesburg police and faces serious charges.

The suspect, said Johannesburg Central Police Station’s spokesperson Captain Xoli Mbele, failed to produce proof of purchase of the gun.

Mbele explained that the police were on patrol duties when they stopped and searched a taxi on the corner of Bree and Ntemi Piliso streets.

While searching the taxi, they found a black pistol in the possession of one of the two occupants.

“The suspect told the police that it’s a toy gun and he bought it for his child for a school project but he does not have any proof of payment. He was immediately arrested and detained,” said Mbele.

The 49-year-old suspect is currently in police custody and Mbele said the investigation is underway and the man will soon appear in the Johannesburg Magistrates’ Court for possession of a dangerous weapon.

Details: Johannesburg Central Police Station 011 497 7000.
