Two friends and authors host book fair in Johannesburg

JOHANNESBURG – The objective is to give independent authors somewhere to sell their books.

The Johannesburg Writers Club held its first-ever book fair on Saturday 24 August at Cosmic Comics in Blackheath.

Highlands North resident Richard Edwards organised the fair together with John West. The two friends and fellow writers met earlier this year at another book fair in Johannesburg.

They have been encouraging themselves and other writers to meet and sell their books directly to the public.

Edwards said they had tried several other craft fairs and markets to sell their books, but decided a more targeted approach was needed to attract fellow book lovers. And so the idea of hosting their fair was born.

“The objective is to give independent authors somewhere to sell their books and meet their readers,” said Edwards.

“Through contacts made through various writing clubs, a total of eleven authors attended selling a range of books from horror and sci-fi, to young adult and picture books for children to poetry and business books.”

Additionally, two independent book retailers attended, selling second-hand books and collectables.

“Such was the success of the first book fair, a second one is planned at the Ferndale on Republic site, the old Randburg Waterfront, on 14 September,” Edwards added.

Anyone interested in selling their books can email John at talktojohn.com@gmail.com or Richard at richfree8@gmail.com.
