Help for needy available in Joburg north-east

ORCHARDS – We don't really do much besides exercise, listen to music and chat.

The Silver Lining Group is inviting people who suffer from brain-related conditions to their daily therapeutic activities to help them deal with their condition.

The group was started about two years ago by Orchards resident Bev Cohen after realising a need for such an initiative to help those suffering from such illnesses.

Cohen said even though she currently worked with mostly the aged, she said young people who required the services were also welcome.

“We don’t really do much besides exercise, listen to music, chat, play games to fulfil the day rather than sitting at home doing nothing,” said Cohen.

“If you feel lonely at home and think it is best to join other people who might be experiencing what you are experiencing, this is the right place to come to. This is to avoid sitting at home doing nothing but feeling sorry for yourself.”

She said people suffering from brain injuries, dementia or Alzheimer’s were assisted with socialisation and stimulation activities with the help of an occupational therapist.

“Currently we have about 12 people in the group who participate and we hope we’ll be able to attract others suffering from the mentioned conditions.”

Cohen concluded that the services come at a cost but added that it was reasonable for everyone to afford.
