JHB CBD at a standstill as locals torch buildings and cars

INNER CITY –  A number of people are expected to appear in court today on charges of public violence during the looting at the CBD last night (1 September) where the lives of a woman and two men were claimed. 


The police arrested several people yesterday in the CBD for allegedly looting while a mob torched buildings and cars.

 

Speaking to EWN, Captain Mavela Masondo said the people arrested have been accused of looting a number of shops in the area. Currently, the situation has escalated to the areas around the CBD, including Hillbrow, Park Station and the MTN taxi rank.

The following streets have been closed in the the Joburg CBD:

  • Lilian Ngoyi between Pretorious and Boom streets
  • Boom between Thabo Sehume and Sisulu streets

Struben between Thabo Sehume and Sisulu streets

Johannes Ramokoase between Thabo Sehume and Sisulu streets

Madiba between Thabo Sehume and Sisulu streets

Soutpansberg between Boom and Steve Biko streets

Masondo said there will be hourly updates about the situation.
