Foreign-owned businesses torched in Jeppe

JEPPESTOWN – Shops and businesses allegedly belonging to foreign nationals were forced to close on 1 September after violence erupted in Jeppestown.


Shops and businesses allegedly belonging to foreign nationals in Jeppestown, were forced to close after violence erupted in the area.

A number of shops were reportedly broken into in Jeppestown on 1 Septemeber, while a number of car workshops have been torched. Firefighters battled to extinguish the fire in one of the buildings after it was set alight by protesters.

The situation was closely monitored by heavy police presence.

Gauteng police spokesperson Captain Mavela Masondo said no injuries were reported but four people were arrested for being in possession of suspected stolen property and on a charge of public violence.
