Safa Joburg Region steps in to stop infighting in Alex football

ALEXANDRA -– The ANLFA will learn its fate during the course of ther week, that's the word from the Safa Johannesburg Region.

The feuding executive committee of the Alexandra Northrand Local Football Association (ANFLA) will learn of their fate from the helm of all things football in the township during the course of this week.

This follows a decision of the South African Football Association (Safa) Joburg Region to intervene in the ongoing feud among the members of the association which is threatening to render the LFA dysfunctional.

The infighting between members of the board has been going on for some time now and on one occasion, the president of the LFA Maisha Molepo called on the veterans of Alex football during one of their meetings to ‘stand up and step in’ to save the LFA from collapse.

The dysfunctional element was denied by the secretary-general Mafika Morajane, who said the LFA was not dysfunctional but had ‘problems’ that needed to be resolved, without wanting to disclose the nature of the problems.

The committee failed to provide the trophy and medals for the recently ended ANLFA Promotional League and clubs have not been paid their winnings, including soccer kits and balls promised to them.

A Top 8 competition of the ANLFA Promotional Leagu had no trophies and medals, including the prize money for the winners, and the Maisha Molepo Foundation then stepped in and went begging and secured kits, trophies and medals.

Eventually, the committee was called to a meeting in the hope that the feuding factions might be able to find one another but this was not to be. When this failed, a meeting of the clubs was then called, after which Molepo announced on 21 August that at the meeting it had been resolved to dissolve the committee with immediate effect.

It was at this juncture that the Safa Joburg Region stepped in and reinstated the executive committee, pending its investigations and talks with the clubs. The talks are ongoing and both factions have opted to remain mum until Safa completes its investigation.

Numerous engagement meetings have already been held with the clubs with another follow up meeting expected on 28 August, which is expected to come up with a possible resolution to the matter and also chart the way forward.

A directive letter from Safa Joburg president Phil Mogodi, signed by the CEO Colin Jones, said the region would this week give direction on the way forward to resolving the current impasse being experienced by the ANLFA.

If Safa Joburg decides to disband the committee, most of whose leaders have since called it quits soon after the last elective AGM of 2017, fresh elections will be ordered as part of the way forward in forging unity among the factions.
