Take note: Juma Mountain Bike Race road closures

JOHANNESBURG – Jan Smuts Avenue will be closed on 23 August from 8pm to 5am to construct a scaffold bridge.

The Juma Mountain Bike Race occurs every year and follows roughly the same format.

This according to Ward 117 councillor, Tim Truluck, who said in a Facebook post recently that the race causes very little disruption as the trails are along the various rivers and the stormwater drains.

“However, they do surface at Saxonwold between Oxford Road and Zoo Lake for a couple of kilometres, which does result in some road closures and delays for motorists,” he explained on Facebook.

“Note that the closures in the suburban Saxonwold roads will not apply to residents, but you should expect delays getting in and out of your property, depending on the number of bikers using the road,” he advised.

Roads will be closed on Sunday (25 August) from 5am to 3pm.

Truluck also said that the below closures will be operating on 25 August:

  • Oxford Road at the intersection of Englewold Drive/8th Avenue. The race will cross Oxford Road and traffic will be diverted away from this intersection.
  • Englewold Drive from Oxford Road to Saxonwold Drive.
  • Saxonwold Drive from Englewold Drive to Erlswold Way.
  • Erlswold Way from Saxonwold Drive to Jan Smuts Avenue

There will be scaffold bridge across Jan Smuts Avenue. Jan Smuts Avenue will be closed on 23 August from 8pm to 5am to construct it and closed again from 8pm on 26 August to 5am on 27 August, to dismantle the bridge.

“Also, they will be riding on the trails around the perimeter of Delta Park as well as along the Braamfontein Spruit from Tana Road to beyond Blairgowrie. Delta Park will be open for other users, but please exercise care when starting and ending your walks at the various car parks and access roads,” Truluck added.

He concluded that will be another run, from Wanderers to Lower Houghton, on Sunday 25 August. “This means there will be additional road closures to the east of Oxford Road in the morning. I would advise that you avoid the whole area between Corlett Drive to Riviera Road in Killarney if you are trying to get to the M1 or beyond.”
