#BuildingNewJozi project underway

YEOVILLE – Today’s sod-turning events marks the beginning of a hopeful era for all residents across the City of Johannesburg.

The City of Johannesburg’s Executive Mayor, Councillor Herman Mashaba, was joined by the MMC for Economic Development, councillor Leah Knott, and the MMC for Development Planning, councillor Reuben Masango, at sod-turning ceremonies of the first four of 84 properties earmarked for redevelopment.

These ground-breaking ceremonies follow a rigorous tender process to secure successful bids which will advance the City’s aims of not only revitalising the inner-city but also bringing quality affordable housing to residents and students.

According to the City of Joburg, these properties represent part of a R22 billion investment in the inner-city which is expected to generate 11 000 direct construction sector jobs, at a time when the economy is struggling to generate employment for Joburg residents.

The inner-city revitalisation project is expected to yield about 6 500 units of affordable quality housing with rentals beginning from R900 per month.

With the first of these properties, the City looks forward to launching more developments for residents and realising mayor Mashaba’s vision of turning the inner-city into a construction site.
