Police recover abandoned baby in Joburg CBD

JOHANNESBURG – Police rescue an abandoned baby in the Joburg Inner City.

Metro police found an abandoned newborn baby on 15 August while they were patrolling in the inner-city.

Officers Nathi Mkhabela and Richard Makhuvele of the Recovery Unit noticed a group of street kids huddled in a corner and it seemed as if they were looking at something.

“Officer Mkhabela approached the street kids to find out what they were looking at. When he got closer he heard a baby crying and to his amazement he found an abandoned baby dumped in a blue carry bag at the corner of Plein and Quartz streets near the MTN taxi rank,” said Metro police spokesperson Xolani Fihla.

“Officer Mkhabela brought the recovery truck closer to protect the scene and EMS were radioed for assistance. The baby was crying profusely so officer Mkhabela picked the baby up and at that moment the baby stopped crying. Feeling the breeze of a cold Joburg evening they waited for the ambulance inside the truck with the heater on.”

Fihla said the baby was checked when the ambulance arrived and it was confirmed that officer Mkhabela had found a healthy baby girl who was three to five days old.

“The baby was taken to Charlotte Maxeke Hospital for further observation and will be handed over to social workers.”
