Common robberies on the rise in Parkhurst, Greenside and Parktown North

GREENSIDE – Suspects are targeting restaurants and using different cars to steal from customers while they wait for taxis.

Parkview police warn residents to be on their guard against common robberies after receiving numerous reports of these incidents over the course of July in the suburbs of Greenside, Parktown North and Parkhurst.

Spokesperson for the Parkview Police Station Captain Tintswalo Sibeko said, “On 30 July, a victim reported that he was outside a restaurant [on the corner of Barry Hertzog Avenue and Gleneagles Roads in Greenside] calling an Uber taxi while busy on his cell phone when an unknown man came and grabbed his cell phone and jumped into a white Toyota Corolla and drove off.”

“It appears that the suspect’s target restaurants and they are using different cars to steal from the customers. Residents are cautioned to take care of their valuables and avoid using their cell phones while waiting outside the restaurant for the Uber taxi as it gives the criminals an opportunity to steal from them.”

Sibeko said that the investigations regarding these common robberies are ongoing and any person with information should contact Parkview police on 011 067 6000.
