Enjoy a picnic at Hugh Wyndham Park to usher in the spring season

DUNKELD WEST – The local community is invited to picnic at the Hugh Wyndham Park on 1 September.

Community members are invited to celebrate the spring season while enjoying a picnic with family or friends at Hugh Wyndham Park in Dunkeld West on 1 September from noon until 4pm.

Chairperson of the Friends of Hugh Wyndham Park Fran Swart said the purpose of the event, which is open to the public, was to attract people to the park and make the greater community aware of the initiatives planned for the year ahead.

Executive Mayor Herman Mashaba has also confirmed his attendance, where he is expected to unveil a plaque on the tree he planted in the park last year.

Community members are encouraged to bring along a picnic basket or purchase food and cool drinks at the park, view art from more than 30 local artists, play netball and cricket, enjoy relaxing music, and a playground and various children’s games.

“It’s a cultured, outdoor family fun day. All are welcome,” said Swart.

Looking to the year ahead, volunteers hope to fulfil their master plan which includes better entrances, boarded walkways, more tree planting, an amphitheatre, more park furniture, bins and reed control.

The Friends of Hugh Wyndham Park rely on regular donations from community members to keep the park looking good. “We are looking for pro bono architectural design consulting to sketch up workable entrances which direct people to the paths within the park. These will serve as information centres for the Johannesburg City Parks and Zoo (JCPZ) regulations, park news and events,” said Swart.

“We also hope to conclude a joint venture with a local gym company to install an outdoor gym, which will be a major neighbourhood asset.”

Friends of Hugh Wyndham Park maintain close ties with JCPZ, Craigpark Residents Association, and other park and residents committees to ensure they have channels into all communities for requests from park users.

Dog walkers are encouraged to pick up after their dogs using bags supplied at the park. Locals are also urged to join the monthly A Re Sebetseng campaign to deep clean the park on the third Saturday of every month.
