Councillor Huggett urges homeowners to apply caution

HOUGHTON ESTATE – Homeowners can expect contractors knocking on their doors, asking them to sign forms.

People living in Ward 73 in Johannesburg are expected to sign forms to allow contractors to start with their new sewerage pipes project soon, however, a local councillor has some advice for them.

Eleanor Huggett, Ward 73 councillor, said with the new Johannesburg Water’s pipes reticulation project coming soon in the suburbs, homeowners need to be cautious when signing the forms.

The City of Johannesburg water utility, Johannesburg Water (JW), is expected to instal new sewerage pipes to enable free flow of waste and water in their pipes.

The entity is undertaking a R9-million emergency sewer pipe replacement project soon in the suburbs including in the Houghton Estate which falls under Ward 73.

Though Huggett said it’s a short-term project, she, however, added there will be minimal disruptions in the region with the aim to improve the services.

According to the councillor, the project will take about two months as opposed to the entity that announced recently that it will take about six months.

However, Huggett said when the time comes for the project to start, homeowners can expect contractors knocking on their doors asking them to sign forms which will grant them permission to dig up their pavements.

“The aim is to pull the new pipes through existing accesses and only when absolutely necessary, new access holes will be dug,” said Huggett.

“Please contact me if you have any concerns regarding this and don’t sign any forms which state that you are ‘happy’ with the quality of the work until you are absolutely satisfied.”

Meanwhile, the project is expected to enable local unemployed people jobs and equip them with much-needed skills in the construction industry.

Only Ward 73 labour is to be used with about 10 to 12 people at this point, said Huggett.

She said, “We look forward to the improved services…and any areas being dug up will be fully reinstated.”

Other areas expected to be affected include Orange Groove, Orchards and Bramley along the Louis Botha Corridors of Freedom.
