Gina Solomon, the principal and owner of Preston Nursery School for the last five years, has always been passionate about working with children.
“When I bought into the nursery school as an owner, I bought in as a mom at the school,” she said.”The children get out of bed; into the car; come here and they are home again.”
Solomon endeavours to keep the children as comfortable at school as they are at home. Since she took over the school, she has turned it into a safe learning environment where every child has the possibility of reaching his or her full potential – socially and academically.
“The school was previously known as Highlands North Nursery School and when I took over I rebranded by changing the name to Preston Nursery School but kept the ethos of the first owner’s vision in an established school that has been here for over 40 years,” she said.
“We work on a syllabus that’s conducive to children being able to slot in easily at either public or private schools and we have happy, confident children who often don’t like to go home at the end of the day.
“We have received compliments from feeder schools in the north-eastern Johannesburg region about the education level offered at Preston.”
The school operates from 7am until 5.30pm and is accommodating to parents who may need slight variations to these times on occasion. The school offers affordable fees. The owner said she understands as a parent that schooling is expensive. She tries to assist parents by keeping her costs lower while still maintaining high standards within the school.
With a range of extra-curricular activities offered at the school, children learn through playing. The school offers three classes with 12 staff members. The first class, the Lion Cubs, accommodates babies from three months to two years old and the ratio is one staff member to three babies. The second class, the Care Bears, accommodates children from three to four years old and the third class, the Smarties, children between five and six years old, both with ratios of one staff member to five children.
