Police embrace women-led operations during Women’s Month

JOBURG – Female officers will be conducting roadblocks, stop and searches and investigate cases of gender-based violence.


The South African Police Service (SAPS) is embracing #OperationBasadi across the country.

The initiative is a women police officer-led operation which had success over the long weekend of 8 August to 11 August in Johannesburg with more than 200 suspects arrested for numerous crimes.

The operation is aimed at preventing, combating and investigating cases of gender-based violence and violence against vulnerable groups.

In a statement released by SAPS, the operation involved roadblocks, stop and searches and foot patrols. “More than 200 suspects were arrested for crimes such as murder, arson, possession of unlicensed firearms, theft, rape, malicious damage to property, driving while under the influence of alcohol, possession of stolen property, malicious damage to property and undocumented persons, ” the statement read.

The arrested suspects will appear in various magistrates’ courts.

The operation is set to last until the end of August as Women’s Month comes to a close.
