Gunman arrested with unlicensed firearm in Johannesburg

JOHANNESBURG – The recovered firearm will be sent to ballistic testing to ascertain if it was used in the commission of other crimes.

Johannesburg Central Police Station members arrested a 25-year-old gunman with an illegal firearm on the corner of Jeppe and Delvers streets on 4 August.

This according to the spokesperson, Captain Xoli Mbele, who added that the suspect was arrested after robbing a woman of her valuables.

Mbele said security guards were patrolling when a female victim alerted them that she has been robbed by four suspects. “When they saw the police vehicle they ran away, and the police, in conjunction with security guards gave chase but he was apprehended by the community.

“The suspect was assaulted by the community members before police came to his rescue. He is in hospital under police guard. They recovered an unlicensed firearm and ammunition.”

Mbele urges the community to refrain from assaulting suspects because it is a criminal offence.

The recovered firearm will be sent for ballistic testing to ascertain if it was used in the commission of other serious and violent crimes.

He said an investigation is underway and the suspect is expected to appear soon in the Johannesburg Magistrate’s Court.
