Repairs on Zoo Lake Swimming Pool will be done by 1 September

PARKVIEW – The MMC said the Zoo Lake Swimming Pool will be ready by 1 September but emphasised the 'no alcohol on premises' By-law.

With the swimming season almost around the corner, people might consider refreshing themselves in public swimming pools in their communities.

The MMC for Community Development in the City of Johannesburg, councillor Nonhlanhla Sifumba, conducted an inspection of the Zoo Lake swimming pool with various stakeholders. The aim of the inspection was to ensure that the pool would be ready to be opened on 1 September which is the start of the swimming season. The inspection ensured that the mandatory repairs and maintenance had been carried out in compliance with occupational health standards.

Sifumba said, “During the last inspection there were concerns about the selling of alcohol within the premises whilst we made it clear that no alcohol is allowed here. Security personnel don’t have the authority to confiscate alcohol if found in people’s ownership. It becomes a by-law infringement and in that case the Johannesburg Metro Police Department has to intervene.”

She re-emphasised that no alcohol was allowed on the premises.

Ward 117 councillor Tim Truluck mentioned some challenges which included the Zoo Lake swimming pool bordering between two regions and that made it unclear who had oversight. He also suggested some upgrades should be made to the car park of the facility.
