Juniors cultivate their gardening skills

PARKVIEW – Grade R to Grade 3 learners at Parkview Junior School get taught to garden and plant vegetables.

Parkview Junior School Parent Teachers Association has started a new initiative of teaching their children how to plant veggies and literally grow their gardening skills in the process.

Caryl Kelly of the association said each class in this unique little school that caters only for foundation phase grades R to 3, was given a grow pod to fill with compost and then to plant a selection of veggies.

“The idea is that the veggies grown will be combined with the soup items that the school collects weekly to donate to Newclare Primary School. “They also plan to support the soup kitchen of the local church in Parkview and hopefully the ground staff working at the school will also be able to benefit from the veggie garden,” said Kelly.

She added that the children have also planted seeds into recycled plastic tubs that they will be selling at their annual Garden Fun Day to be held on 7 September at Parkview Primary School.
