Pridwin Prep School is working hard to minimise the use of single-use plastics by implementing #PlasticFreeFridays.
The aim of the day is to make boys more aware of the responsibility they have to look after the environment and learn that small changes can make a difference.
Since only 16 per cent of plastic in South Africa is recycled and 84 per cent of plastic waste is either dispersed into the oceans or overflowing landfills, Pridwin decided to take steps to make a change.
Some ways that plastic waste can be reduced include:
- Reusable shopping bags
- Opt for plastic-free packaging
- Create eco-bricks
- Use reusable coffee cups
- Switch plastic bottles for glass alternatives
- Refuse single-use straws and cutlery
- Swap your plastic toothbrush for a bamboo alternative
- Leave cling film off your shopping list and use a wax alternative
- Compost food waste
- Stop buying chewing gum
- Reduce, reuse, recycle.
Learners are encouraged to buy lunch box items in bulk rather than single-use packets for example nuts, biltong, dried fruit, biscuits etc. Learners are also encouraged to pack their lunch in reusable containers.
