Art lovers can look forward to St John’s Kulcha Afrika

HOUGHTON – The inaugural festival will take place from 3 to 4 August at St John's College.

St John’s College invites the community to their inaugural Kulcha Afrika: Bunka Kulcha festival celebrating South Africa’s rich art history.

The exhibition ‘Bunka Kulcha’ will showcase visual arts in the form of sculpture, photography, creative expression, drawing and a number of other art forms. The intention is for the festival to add more art and culture disciplines each year.

The event will focus on showcasing up and coming artists and educating the community about the important role art plays in society.

The exhibition is inspired by its venue at St John’s College – the bunker-like Renee England Auditorium. The word ‘bunker’ signals an ethos of resistance to dogma, a position and value particularly important in a world grown divisive, intolerant and absolutist in which artistic expression has become more didactic and prescriptive.

Curator Maria Fidel Regueros said, “The exhibition is about celebrating creativity and culture and unpacking creative expression. A large portion of artists are young and selected based on their ability to push the various art forms.”

The programme includes art tours, talks, panel discussions with exhibiting artists and curators and an Edoardo Villa art tour on 3 and 4 August.
