Sabres, guns and whips! Don’t miss Russian folklore group, Stanitsa, at Joburg Theatre

This August, Joburg Theatre is proud to stage yet another thrilling, colourful and culturally rich performance guaranteed to leave audiences demanding an encore!

Through beautifully expressive song, dance and music, the Stanitsa folklore group is preserving and developing a traditional culture scarcely known to audiences outside of Southern Russia and Ukraine.

In other words, we South Africans are in for an absolute treat!

The group’s acclaimed performances showcase the traditions of the southern Kuban region, situated near the Black Sea.

With rattling sabres, guns and whips, the Stanitsa group’s dances are as exciting as they are varied, and the superb choreography speaks to the history of the Cossacks who settled the region centuries ago.

Renowned for their hospitality and a love of their heritage, the Cossacks were originally an East-Slavic people who created democratic, self-governing and semi-military societies. Over time, they were regarded as a military class, much like the romanticised knights of Medieval Europe.

Historically, the Stanitsas were an economic and political organisation of the Cossack people.

The Stanitsa folklore group was formed in 1990, under the auspices of the House of Culture and Sports in Krasnodar. The group’s name is inspired by the River Kuban.

Stanitsa has been involved in various folk festivals in Russia and beyond, including Belarus, Ukraine, Poland, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Germany, Bulgaria, China, Qatar, Cyprus, Turkey, Spain, Portugal and France.

And now they’re here in South Africa for 2 performances only!
