Six robbers arrested in different crime incidents

JEPPE – The suspects were taken to Jeppe Police Station and charged with possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunitions.

Jeppe police have arrested six suspects in three consecutive days around their areas of service and recovered five unlicensed firearms and a knife.

This according to spokesperson for the Jeppe Police Station, Captain Richard Munyayi adding that the suspects are currently in police custody facing serious charges.

Munyayi said that two men, aged 44 and 30, were arrested on 16 July after the police received a tip-off that two suspects driving in a red Hyundai were about to commit a crime in Troyeville.

The officers, who were driving an unmarked vehicle along Albertina Sisulu Road, spotted the car fitting the description. They stopped the car and searched the two men who were travelling form Alexandra to Johannesburg CBD. “Upon searching them, they found two firearms, A CZ75 and Glock in their possession,” he said.

“When they asked for firearm licences, they could not produce them and the suspects were arrested and the firearms, with three magazines full of live rounds, were confiscated.”

On 17 July, the same officers were driving along Main Reef Road in Benrose when they stopped two men during a routine patrol. Munyayi said that when they searched them, they found a Norinco firearm with nine live rounds and an okapi knife. The suspects were taken to the station where they were charged and detained.

In another incident, three suspects were arrested in Doorfontein on 18 July. Munyayi said the suspects allegedly followed two men from a shopping centre after they withdrew money from a bank. The suspects followed the two men to Bedfordview and as they were about to enter the gate at their workplace, they allegedly accosted them.

He added, “Two suspects jumped out from their car and pointed a firearm at the victim and ordered him to give them the money, but the money was with his colleague who was driving in another car.

“The suspect removed the key from the ignition and opened the boot where they found a laptop and a sports bag. [The suspects] took them and his iPhone before driving off.”

The victim informed his colleague of what had just happened and they immediately called the police. The police acted swiftly and the victim’s cell phone was activated and traced to Doornfontein.

According to Munyayi, the police followed the signal and the suspects were spotted along Simert Road and police arrested them. Two firearms, a 45 Colt automatic and 357 Magnum and a hammer, were found in their possession.

The suspects were arrested and taken to Jeppe Police Station and they have since appeared in various Johannesburg magistrates’ courts.
