Community help police apprehend robbery suspect

JOHANNESBURG – The suspects fired several shots but no one was injured.

Johannesburg police arrested a 37-year-old male for business robbery, possession of unlicensed firearm and ammunition and two others are still on the run.

The incident happened on the corner of Bree and Troye streets on 19 July after the trio allegedly robbed a nearby supermarket.

It is alleged that two suspects entered the supermarket pretending to be customers and the third one stood guard at the entrance door.

Captain Xoli Mbele, the spokesperson for the Johannesburg Central Police Station, said they allegedly pointed a firearm at a 34-year-old employee, took his cell phone and an undisclosed amount of money.

“He then screamed for help and the community came to his rescue,” said Mbele.

“The suspects fired several shots but no one was injured. The community apprehended one of the suspects and police came to his rescue while the community was assaulting him.”

Mbele said the firearm that was used in the crime was also recovered. Two other suspects are still at large and police investigation is underway.

The suspect has since appeared in the Johannesburg Magistrates’ Court.
