Robbery suspect injured during a shoot-out with Yeoville police

YEOVILLE – A shopkeeper, who was shot during the shoot-out, later died in hospital.

A robber was shot and hospitalised during a shoot-out with the Yeoville police following a business robbery on Rockey Street in Yeoville.

According to the spokesperson for the Yeoville Police Station, Captain Sifiso Mabizela, the incident took place on 15 July.

Mabizela said two suspects entered the store, pretending to be customers. One of the suspects allegedly pointed a firearm at the shopkeeper, demanded money and took his cell phone.

“It is not clear how much the suspect fled with but the shopkeeper followed the assailants and one of the suspects shot at him,” he said.

The police, who were around the area, heard the gunshots, saw the suspects running and called for backup.

“A crime prevention unit responded and gave chase after the suspects who continued shooting towards them until they caught up with him on Regent Street,” Mabizela added.

“The shopkeeper who was chasing after the suspects was also shot during the shoot-out. The suspect was shot on the left, lower leg and later arrested. They were rushed to hospital, however, the shopkeeper succumbed to his injuries and passed away later on in the day.”

Police have obtained video footage and are currently busy with investigations.

The arrested suspect, who has since been discharged, is still in custody and will appear in court soon. The other suspect is still on the run and Mabizela has urged anyone with knowledge of his whereabouts to assist.
