Joy as local schools receive rugby kits donations

ALEXANDRA – Gavin Hendry of Boots for Africa said they decided to come to Alexandra because of the schools' commitment and dedication to the sports.

In their quest to make sport more accessible to young people in developing nations, Wallabies rugby star David Pocock in partnership with Boots for Africa non-profit organisation recently donated rugby kits to five schools in Alexandra.

The organisation donated more than 200 rugby balls and 180 pairs of rugby boots to players from East Bank High School, KwaBhekilanga Secondary School, Marlboro Combine, Minerva Secondary and Pholosho Junior Secondary School.

Gavin Hendry of Boots for Africa said they decided to come to Alexandra because of the schools’ commitment and dedication to the sports. “Our organisation gives priority to children from the disadvantaged communities and that is why we chose to come to Alex and donate all these that you see to the local schools,” he said.

Former Springbok player, chief executive officer of South African Rugby Legends and an ambassador for Boots for Africa, Stefan Terblanche said it was encouraging to see youngsters committed to the sport despite challenges in their upbringing.

“I strongly believe that these kids have what it takes of making it to the top. As rugby people and administrators, it is our responsibility to give these kids an opportunity and have facilities in which they can play rugby, get to games and have all that is needed to become the best. It makes me so proud to see these youngsters committed to the sport,” Terblanche said.

Timmy Goodwin from Golden Lions Rugby Union thanked the organisation for extending a helping hand and its contribution to develop rugby in the area.
