Wanderers Golf Course division update

The Wanderers Golf Course division issue is still ongoing. The Rosebank Killarney Gazette reported on Johannesburg Urban Urban Forest Alliance’s (Jufa) objections on the division in an article titled, Jufa would rather preserve green [Week ending 19 July].

Jufa voiced their various objections as to why the division should not go ahead, however, correspondence between Jufa and the Johannesburg City Council showed that Jufa needed to make an appeal. An appeal is a formal request for a review or change of an official decision. When Jufa chairperson Markus Scheuermaier inquired about the appeal process, the response from City Council was, “Did you make payment to the application? If so please provide us with the invoice or proof of payment. No application will be processed unless payment has been made. Please also note the fee payable is R1 958.”

Jufa adhered to the requirements of the appeal process and paid the required amount. Scheuermaier said in his recent communication by email to City Council, “We look forward to hearing from the council, and trust our concerns will be duly considered, in a manner that is in the interest of all residents of the City of Johannesburg, and not only in the interest of the few that will benefit from the proposed redevelopment. We also assume that all rezoning applications on-site have now been pended, as per the Municipal Planning By-Law.”

The quoted By-Law (16) states, “An appeal lodged under this section suspends any decision taken under the provisions of this by-law and any post-decision procedures, as the case may be, until the appeal has been finalised.”

An update will be given as soon as City Council responds to Jufa’s appeal.
