A number of volunteers put their words and hands into action as they packed meals for infants. The food-packaging initiative was championed by Rise Against Hunger (RAH) and eNCA in partnership with Johannesburg City Parks and Zoo and was held at the Johannesburg Zoo in Saxonwold.
The volunteers spent their 67 Minutes for Mandela Day packing 6 700 meals for infants. Member of the Mayoral Committee for Community Development, Nonhlanhla Sifumba was present and encouraged everyone to do their 67 minutes any chance they get.
“If you are a lawyer, do some pro-bono work; if you are a child at home, do some dishes and chores. It’s all about giving back according to your capabilities.”
The Rise Against Hunger Africa hunger-eradication programme consists of volunteers packaging highly nutritious meals comprising of rice, soya and a dehydrated vegetable mix formulated to combat malnutrition.
The volunteers had their hygienic caps and gloves on, measured the right quantities on the scale, sealed the food packages then put thenm in sealed boxes while they moved to some music tunes in the background.
