Green fingered locals urged to join Zoo Lake Gardening Committee

PARKVIEW – The new gardening committee appeals for donations of indigenous plants, soil and fertiliser.

Are you a keen gardener with expertise you can share with Zoo Lake? The recently formed Zoo Lake Gardening Committee is eager for you to share your knowledge and expertise to revitalise the public park.

Garden artist and head of the gardening committee Belinda Tapia-Garcia said, “I walk around Zoo Lake every morning and see how things could be so much more appealing for the public if someone would put some effort in.”

The gardening committee was formed to fill this gap. So far, the committee consists of three members but appeals to anyone with knowledge of plants to join.

Tapia-Garcia said that the initial task of the committee will be to walk around the park and assess its needs.”I have a vision of creating a walkway around the park, which has an exciting garden theme. We will bring in plants of different colours and textures to attract more people here.”

She also desires to see younger generations involved. “I want the public to bring teens and children to the park to participate in our gardening days and learn about plants because this is their legacy.”

Tapia-Garcia said that she hopes to later create a nursery at the park which can produce plants that can be sold to the public and create an income for all the expenses at the park.

Chair of the Zoo Lake Users Group Fran Haslam appeals to the public to donate hardy, indigenous plants for the project.

“We plan to have gardening days when locals and their gardeners can come and plant. We hope to divide the park into quadrants and work to get each section done,” said Haslam.

“We are so grateful that Belinda is giving her time and expertise to get the flower beds and gardens looking like a park. We are giving this our best shot.”

School environmental committees and local gardening clubs are urged to join and make a difference.

Donations of soil, fertiliser, compost, indigenous shrubs and plants are welcome.
