Vinny Da Vinci and Culoe De Song pass the baton onto the next generation of DJs and producers

JOBURG – Vinny Da Vinci and Culoe De Song take over The Lab Johannesburg with blazing sets.

Earlier this year, Mixmag and BUDX announced Joburg as the newest destination in its live mix series, The Lab. Since its first episode on 15 May, The Lab Johannesburg has been hosted at Shine Studios in Braamfontein.

Following the Lab Johannesburg’s debut, the talents have been rolling in at the weekly event and on 10 July dance and house music icons, Vinny Da Vinci and Culoe De Song took over The Lab and delivered blazing sets with Culoe taking the audience back to when we were first introduced to his tribal sounds and to the current period that sees him take Afro-house and deep tech to the world –his travels have evidently influenced the vibe and energy in his music.

“It’s just about simple cultural differences, we love to dance and have our own distinct way of consuming music and each city has its own special thing,” Culoe said.

Legendary DJ and producer, Vinny Da Vinci is renowned for delivering trance-inducing soulful sets, his set at The Lab was no different as he took us back to the hay-days of the City’s club culture. Vinny said The Lab also doubled as a passing on of the torch between legends and budding DJs. He relayed the first time he met Culoe and how a young Culoe delivered a great set.

“He was on the line-up, he was so young and played such great music. I enjoyed his set and I think after the set we sat down and clicked and we’re today,” Vinny said.

Lending his voice to Zandi Tisani’s Rave & Resistance, a doccie that looks at the birth of club culture in Joburg. Vinny said the culture has changed for the better with an array of sub-genres and opportunities that are available.

“It’s changed for the better in the sense that you’ve got new young upcoming producers who are doing great things out there and for me it shows growth,” said Vinny.

Since The Lab Johannesburg’s inception, Shimza, DJ Zinhle, Da Capo, Kid Fonque, Black Motion and more have taken over the decks with a view of the city providing a worthy backdrop for some of the country’s most exciting dance and house music talents.

“I love playing in Joburg, especially in these areas, because I know you’re going to get people that are just here to consume and appreciate the music, it’s good energy and that’s what I’m here for,” said Culoe.
