Quick reaction from community members aid police to catch suspect

JOHANNESBURG – The suspect was apprehended by the community before he was handed to the police.


A 31-year-old man was arrested on 4 July by the Johannesburg police after allegedly robbing his victim of R50 on the corner of Eloff and Smollen streets.

It is alleged that the suspect robbed his victim, a 28-year-old male, using a toy gun.

According to the spokesperson for the Johannesburg Central Police Station, Captain Xoli Mbele, the victim was walking when he suddenly saw the suspect pointing a weapon at him, demanding his cell phone. “He took his cell phone and R50 cash before he fled the scene.

“The victim shouted for help and the community came to his rescue and apprehended a suspect. Police were contacted and recovered all the belongings of the victim and a toy gun used in the commission of the crime.”

The suspect is expected to appear in the Johannesburg Magistrates’ Court soon.

“We would like to commend the community for apprehending the suspect and contacting the police.

“Working together between the police and the community will subdue the escalation of crime. Keep up the good work.”
