The Compassionate Friends non-profit organisation hosts annual walk for love to raise funds

HOUGHTON – Debbie James said the organisation offers counselling services every week in Highlands North to bereaved parents free of charge.

The Johannesburg branch of The Compassionate Friends non-profit organisation recently hosted an annual walk for love at King Edward VII School in support of those who lost their loved ones on 6 July this year.

The organisation that offers friendship, counselling and understanding to bereaved parents and siblings was formed in South Africa in 1983 by Linda Abelheim and now has a number of groups throughout the country.

One of the participants of this year’s event, Vivian Sangweni, who lost her three-month-old daughter in 2016, said that participating in the walk in the past has helped her overcome the pain of losing her daughter.

“I lost my beautiful daughter who was three months at the time in 2016. It was hard for me to accept that she was no more until my cousin introduced me to the group. Participating in the group and this event has not only helped me overcome the pain but also equipped me to help others in similar situations,” Sangweni said.

Event coordinator Debbie James said the organisation offer its counselling services every week in Highlands North to bereaved parents who have lost their loved ones free of charge, regardless of whether they are members of the organisation or not.
