Support Toc H as they support local charities

PARKTOWN NORTH – All donations are welcome.

Support the charity shop that receives local donations and supports local charities using local suppliers.

Toc H Charity Shop in 4th Avenue, Parktown North began in 1993, offering everything from vintage clothing to printers and appliances. The friendly store caters for people from all walks of life and supports local charities by supplying fruit and vegetables through Parkview business Tyrone Fruiterers to Guild Cottage in Parktown and Hotel Hope in Melville.

New manager of the shop Vicki Moorer said international organisation Toc H celebrates its 104th birthday this year.

“It was started in 1915 during World War I by an army chaplain in the Belgian town of Poperinge. He found that there was no place for soldiers to recuperate,” said Moorer.

An oasis of solace was then created in a vacant three-storey mansion called Talbot House. This house became a place of rest, recuperation and spiritual renewal for troops either going to or recuperating from the front. It was later abbreviated to Toc H.

Moorer added that the charity shop was totally reliant on donations from the community.

“As items come in, they are priced and put out for sale. We get donations from the area and support local charities using local suppliers. We are all about putting back into the community where the donors live so that they can see their donation making a real difference.”

Co-manager Tendai Sithole said, “We need the support of the community so that we can support the children who suffer the most.”

Guild Cottage provides a safe haven for sexually abused girls in Parktown West. Executive director of Guild Cottage Celiwe Ngwenya said, “It’s beautiful to see the way that Toc H supports us with food.”

Hotel Hope orphanage in Melville supports a number of abandoned children. Operations coordinator Faneli Mavundla said, “The donations from Toc H make a huge difference because it cuts down on food costs. The young children we support are in need of healthy food for their diet.”
