Suspects arrested for armed robberies in Johannesburg

JOHANNESBURG – Three suspects are currently in police custody for armed and common robberies.

Johannesburg police arrested two suspects on 7 July in connection with a robbery incident that took place in the CBD while three others are still on the run.

According to the Johannesburg Central Police Station’s spokesperson, Captain Xoli Mbele, the arrested suspects face charges of armed robbery after a 26-year-old man was robbed of his valuables on the corner of Mooi and Commissioner streets.

“It is alleged that five suspects robbed their victim threatening him with a knife and took his cell phone and about R600 in cash before they fled the scene.

“The victim screamed for help and the police, in conjunction with community patrollers, came to his rescue.

“A cellphone and a knife used in the commission of a crime were recovered. Three suspects are still at large with cash of the victim.”

The two suspects are expected to appear soon in court while the search for the other three suspects still continues.

Meanwhile, in another incident, the police arrested a 37-year-old man for an alleged common robbery on the corner of Klein and De Villiers streets.

“The police saw a suspect bumping a 32-year-old female, opening her handbag and taking her cellphone,” said Mbele.

“He was apprehended right on the spot.”

An investigation is underway and the suspects will appear soon in the Johannesburg Magistrates’ Court.
