Afropunk elevates South African artists onto global stage

JOBURG – Afropunk continues its commitment to support South African creatives.

In May, world-renowned festival and movement, Afropunk, announced the lineup for its critically acclaimed, two-day-long annual celebration, Afropunk Joburg, which will take place 30–31 December at Constitution Hill. The 2019 lineup includes international headlining Solange, Goldlink, Miguel as well as some of South Africa’s favourite artists.

 Since inception in Brooklyn, the festival has expanded around the world in five cities, Paris, Johannesburg, London and Atlanta, in the last five years with additional cities on the horizon. Continuing with their commitment to the support of South African creatives, Afropunk, will debut 2019 BET award winner for Best New International Act, Sho Madjozi at their Atlanta festival on 12 October. KZN born DJ, Muzi will be playing his set at Afropunk Paris on 13 July. Veteran artists Thandiswa Mazwai and DJ Kenzhero who have graced Afropunk stages before in South Africa will be performing in Brooklyn alongside a new wave of South African artists such as BCUC, Doowap, and Rude Boyz.

 Entrenching their commitment to South Africa and working with local creatives, the festival has created its first permanent, live event and office space in Braamfontein dubbed UP POPSAFROPUNK, a dynamic, multi-functional space that gives Afropunk the opportunity to embed into the community 365 days a year, and cement their commitment to South African creatives.
