David Fisher welcomes residents’ inputs on planned Kew Park development

KEW – Another meeting is planned to consider the amended design and incorporating the suggestions from the community.

Residents in Kew are invited to share ideas on a new design of Kew Recreational Park earmarked for an upgrade soon by the City of Johannesburg entity City Parks and Zoo.

Following the meeting held on 26 June at the park with some residents, Ward 74 councillor David Fisher announced that the park will get a new facelift with a new design.

Fisher said they met with an architect appointed by City Parks, Anton Comrie, who presented the preliminary design and explained the thoughts that were considered in developing the initial plan.

He added that there was lots of interactive discussion amongst the residents who had a variety of ideas and suggestions during the meeting.

The councillor said residents suggested that there should be fencing around the park and it was seen as critical. “Residents also requested the introduction of a small or lockable multi-purpose court and an outdoor gym that could be made with natural materials.

“Flattening out of the top of the hill to allow better sight lines into the dark northern edge of the park was also suggested as well as neatening up of trees on the same space. Suggestions also talk about safety and security lighting along the footpaths saying they should not encourage night usage and should be controlled by a timer that switches off lights one hour after sunset.”

Fisher added that the introduction of a pedestrian sidewalk was proposed along Corlett Drive edge as shown on the ‘GREENinc’ plan, which included a running track.

According to Fisher, the development is expected to start in the coming financial year between August and September. “Local businesses and SMMEs are expected to benefit as well in the capital expenditure budget.

“This should be seen as good news for the community and those who attended our meeting were also eagerly happy about the news.”

There will be a second meeting with residents on 8 July at 4pm to consider the amended design and incorporating the suggestions from the community.
