What to do this weekend

JOBURG – Top five things to do in Joburg this weekend.

July came with a bit of a snap! We did our utmost best to stay warm throughout the week – mostly by being indoors. Now it’s time to let the hottest events in the City warm us up this weekend.

Check out our top five things to do this weekend:

5 July: !Sooks at Kitcheners

Dark Disco and House Afrika are set to host !Sooks at Kitcheners on 5 July. One of Swaziland’s finest artists, !Sooks will also launch his album, Symmetry and will be joined by DJ Buhle, Secret Souls, SGVO, and Taz Golden. Entrance is free before 9pm and R50 thereafter.

6 July: The Poetry League

The Poetry League is heating up as it heads closer to the grand finale at the ninth Word N Sound Youth Poetry Festival in October. Each month, 20 poets engage in the fiercest literary battle in hopes of taking home the cash prize and bragging rights. This truly is Africa’s toughest slam with an unforgettable feast for spoken word lovers on 6 July at the Con Cowan Theatre on UJ’s Bunting Rd campus.

6 July: The Intimate Concert with Lira

Fans of Lira are in for a special and intimate affair as Lira takes to the stage at The Lyric Theatre. The concert will include a selection of songs from all six albums, some classic fan favourites presented in a stripped-down manner to create a sense of intimacy while sensitively including a fuller band presentation for certain other songs. There will also be a few surprises to delight the audience. Tickets are available on Computicket from R250.

7 July: Finer Sundays

The Social Club Maboneng & Corona present Finer Sundays, hosted by Punk Mbedzi. Check out the monthly instalment of Maboneng’s day-night experience at The Social Club Maboneng, featuring music from the finest artists South Africa has to offer. Entry is free.

7 July: First Sunday Market

Check out Victoria Yards’ rejuvenated space, browse the maker’s market and visit the food vendors.  All the artists and creators will have their studios open.  The Fish and Chips shop,  Impi Brewery, Primal Spirits, Foakes Coffee and the harvest table at Food I Love You are all well worth visiting as well.
