Almost every day, activists and ordinary individuals share the importance of recycling and The Glass Recycling Company (TGRC) does no different. The company established in 2006, dedicated to promoting, enabling and facilitating glass recycling and reuse in South Africa, launched its sixth Annual Green Dialogues at the Houghton Golf Club.
Chairman of TGRC, Mike Arnold, congratulated the company for reaching 42 per cent of the glass recycling rate which is up from 41 per cent of last year and said the compulsory separation at source mandate helped.
Adding on to that, business and financial journalist, Bruce Whitfield encouraged the creation of opportunities for South Africans so that they may thrive regardless of the chaos going on. Whitfield said chances should be given to the youth in order to reduce unemployment, enhance youth skills and encourage the younger ones in their academic performances.
The year in review given by TGRC CEO, Shabeer Jhetam attested to the role that the company is playing in creating such opportunities. The CEO said the high population growth puts a strain on the ecosystem and in the last 25 years the world has lost forest hectare the size of South Africa. “Our biggest strength is caring for humanity and working together regardless of all the technological advancements we may make. We need to focus on climate change, carbon footprint and recycling in order to achieve the millennium goals set in 2000 which include to preserve the earth.”
Some of the highlights from the given overview are:
- 38 million consumers were reached with the glass recycling message
- 609 tonnes of glass bottles and jars were recovered by learners in 2017/18 schools competition
- Over 80 per cent of glass packaging now diverted from landfill annually
- 1 122 glass entrepreneurs trained and supported during the year
- Over 50 000 income opportunities created.
