Influencers have gradually grown to be powerful and persuasive individuals within lifestyle and entertainment circuits. Whether sparking and fuelling conversations on social media or tweeting and hashtagging live from exclusive events, influencers have garnered so much social capital it’s virtually hard to criticize their powerful roles.
On 27 June, Cosmopolitan hosted the #CosmoInfluencerAwards2019, awards that honour the best social media stars. The awards saw the likes of Bonang Matheba, Mihlali Ndemase, Juanita Khumalo and more walk away with top honours – solidifying their powerful voices on social media.
Matheba’s win follows the South African premiere of her film, Public Figure, an exploration of society’s increasing obsession with social media. Throughout the film, the featured influencers detail how they’ve turned their lives into enterprises, while voicing their personal concerns about the addiction that comes with social media fame.
