Union of Jewish Women graduation ceremony a success

HOUGHTON – The aim of the sewing school is to empower and equip people who are unemployed.

The students of the Union of Jewish Women (UJW) Sewing Empowerment Project graduated during a special ceremony at their offices in Houghton on 13 June.

According to the union’s director, Cindy Kree, the students reflected over the past four months at the ceremony. “They all spoke about their experience and their appreciation for all they had been through and one student was so overcome by emotion as she celebrated making a positive change in her life.”

Kree said that during the course, the students were taught the art of beading and also displayed their beaded items. They also modelled the outfits they had made during the course along with a range of other items. They all received certificates for their completion.

“With grateful thanks to the Lions Club, each student received a non-perishable food parcel.

“It was difficult to believe that four months prior to the course, these students did not even know how to use a sewing machine.”

The union is grateful to their donors and volunteers in assisting to make this project the success it is. “The aim of the sewing school is to empower unemployed people and equip them with the required skills to ultimately be able to support themselves.”

She added that the students who have graduated now produce yarmulkas, bags, aprons, tablecloths and other items which can be ordered through the union.
