Department finally decide on principals’ posts in local schools

JOHANNESBURG – Northview SGB said they were not expecting Papo to be employed, but he is one of their preferred candidates for the job.

The Gauteng Department of Education has finally filled one principal post out of the three in the Johannesburg north-eastern schools in question, and another one is under discussion.

The positions of permanent headmasters at Sandringham, Northview and Highlands North Boys’ high schools have been in question for a year now.

In an email reply to questions sent to the department’s spokesperson Steven Mabona by the North Eastern Tribune, it has been confirmed that the process is finally receiving the desired attention.

A principal post for Northview has been approved and the candidate will assume duties in July. However, the department did not reveal the name of the candidate and has yet to finalise the official process.

Aaron Malepe, the SGB chairperson of Northview, said they’ve been waiting for the department for a while, adding that the interviews were done and recommendations were forwarded with names of preferred candidates.

“We are still waiting for feedback from the department and we want to make it clear that we did not say that we were expecting the department to employ current acting principal [Cecilia Papo] as the previous article stated,” explained Molepe.

“This statement would’ve come out as though we are prejudicing other candidates interested in the job.”

“Highlands North [Boys’] recommendation file was received by the district and there is a scheduled meeting between the SGB and the district director to resolve some issues in the file,” said Mabona in the email.

The department said Sandringham principal’s post is not vacant, saying the principal is off sick to date. The principal, Phillip du Plessis, was hospitalised following an accident last year.
