What to do this weekend

JOBURG – Top five things to do in Joburg this weekend.

The temperatures are slowly hitting the lows and efficiently putting winter into effect. The days are shorter and nights longer and that’s not all bad as that means more night-time fun! All things considered, let’s go out and warm ourselves up this weekend.

Check out our top five things to do this weekend:

21 June: The All-Night Jam

The Goodluck Bar is set to bring the 2019 edition of The All-Night Jam. This year’s event is not only a showcase of raw, uncut and uncensored talent but a concert for artists and music lovers. The TANJ experience provides a networking platform, a space for creatives to engage and exchange knowledge, a space to meet and band with a range of musicians.

22 June: Casa Corona

Casa Corona hits South Africa for the first time this weekend. Taking place from 21–23 June, the weekend-long lifestyle experience brings together artistry in the form of music, photography, food and mixology. Taking place at the Nirox Foundation Sculpture Park, it promises a weekend-long experience of iphonography workshops, mixology, Latin-American cuisine, outdoor cinema and a silent concert.

22 June: 40 Years of Collecting: Celebrating the Standard Bank African Art Collection

40 Years of Collecting: Celebrating the Standard Bank African Art Collection is an exhibition that celebrates the remarkable partnership between Standard Bank and the University of the Witwatersrand to build one of the largest classical African art collections in the southern hemisphere. Curated by Dr Same Mdluli, the exhibition showcases the grand artistic and cultural heritage that connects us all as Africans across borders. To learn more about the art and the exhibition, join the Standard Bank Gallery for a walkabout on 22 June at 10 am.

23 June: Our contemporary needs and the other exhibition opening

Opening at the Absa Gallery, this exhibition explores and highlights how varied and sometimes misconstrued interpretations of historical narratives are drawn on in contemporary urban spaces to construct notions of otherness. It looks at the complexities that exist regarding the notion of otherness (which infers a state of doubleness), both with regard to identity and difference. It further seeks to allow previously marginalised individuals and communities to reclaim their sovereignty by means of carving out spaces in which they can negotiate freedom, equity and dignity.

23 June: SILMIYA – A Concert in Love and Solidarity for Sudan

A gesture of love and solidarity from Artists in South Africa, SILMIYA – A Concert in Love and Solidarity for Sudan, aims to raise money for food, water and much needed medical supplies and assistance for Sudan. More importantly, the concert is in solidarity with the Sudanese revolution. It takes place at Newtown Music Factory and a R100 donation gets you in.
